Sony has confirmed that you will add a new function to the PlayStation 5 consoles at the end of this year that numerous fanatics have been requesting for a long time. While this feature is one that not all PS5 owners can take advantage, those who have a high-end television will surely be happy to see their arrival as part of a next system update.

Delined on the PlayStation blog, Sony recently announced that it will add variable update frequency to PS5 consoles later in 2022. VRR is a function that is only compatible with televisions that have the HDMI 2.1 functionality. In simpler terms, it improves the performance of games that are played on PS5 and makes them look much more fluid than before synchronizing the television update frequency directly with the PlayStation 5 console.

“We are also pleased to share that it is planned to launch variable refresh rate (VRR) in PS5 in the coming months,” Sony said on the PS blog about this new incorporation into the last PlayStation console. «This improves the visual performance of PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame rhythm problems and tearing the screen. The gameplay in many PS5 titles feels more fluid since the scenes are rendered instantaneously, the graphics are sharpened and the entry delay is reduced. PS5 games launched earlier can be optimized completely for VRR through a game patch and future games can include VRR compatibility in the launch ».

Sony also said that VRR is something that can even be applied to games that do not directly support this optimization. If there will be direct improvements for these PS5 games, it is something that Sony has not guaranteed, but in any way, VRR is something that players can activate and deactivate as best as the function is implemented.

For now, the biggest question about the incorporation of VRR to the PS5 consoles arises with the arrival of this update. As Sony specified, the patch will not be launched up to “the next months”, which means that we still do not have a firm launch date. However, each time new details are shared for this future PS5 update, we will make sure to keep you informed here at
