I love the art in these games. I love the action, challenge, sound design, music, everything. Furthermore, I have realized how little I appreciated the story until I am obliged to endure much. Furthermore, I care about these people or their valiant struggle against an oppressive regime. Take me simply to the closest evil robot and let me go crazy. Each of these games is responsible for exploration, side quests and story. For some people, this will be a breath of fresh air in a glittering empty. For me, it is a barrier to cross. History and non-linear game structure resemble stimulation failures. Maybe it’s just an ingrained bias built by years of traditional Mega Man games, but it still colored my experience. I was unduly grateful for the jump button at times when it was handed to me. However, the action is excellent.

Zero games make you feel divine when fighting regular enemies and bosses completely powerless. Your relative weakness eventually countered by upgrades and items, but it’s a slow process. Unless you activate the casual story mode! Then all these upgrades are immediately to you, and they become indeed very different games. Less Challenge, more walking tour through a series of boss fights. It’s so easy that it looks like cheating, which is both a relief and a disappointment. If you are looking for a slight increase, you can activate using the backup. This prevents you from losing any progress as you improve slowly games.

I tried the easy mode (casual script) and it was a real situation monkey paw. At first, I was ecstatic, but it quickly dissipated. You are just sleepwalking through every challenge, waiting patiently for the bosses disintegrate before you. Better to fight seriously that excel at deception. And make no mistake, the fight will be involved. Every boss needs a sacrifice or two to really reduce its schema. Without Save Assist, this can be a costly situation. But like all Mega Man games, patience and perseverance are rewarded with a blessed victory.

One caveat to keep in mind is that it was behind the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS games. Although they have been modified to reflect on the big screen, there is always a distinct pixels’ shortage. Your 50-inch TV will mean to Zero and friends. Fortunately, there are a multitude of display options for your convenience. I flirted with different sizes and display filters before giving up and putting in the original screen. Yes, it’s hideous, but that’s part of the story, dammit! Try reading this collection on a slightly smaller screen if you can help it. 4K will not make you service here.

For years, Zero represented a massive white spot in my mega man story collected. As the RPG Battle Network, I did not know that these games existed. Now, this dead angle is no longer, and I’m a little torn about it. The modifications made to the established formula bring discomfort and pain. But the basic gameplay, the excellent music, the incredible illustrations and the growing challenge are all perfectly intact. Cap com waited to revive these games, and I understand why. Mega Man fans can be disoriented at the beginning, discouraged by the added narrative and exploratory mass. Yet buried under these strange exterior layers is a difficult and sparkling Mega Man game chain, all featuring the red swords of my youth. If you are a fan of Mega Man, or even action platforms in general, the Legacy Collection of Mega Man Zero / EX is worth the detour.
